When I started in 1975, I was convinced that certain insurance and related financial products should be applied equally for most people. I had almost a “one size fits all” approach, following what had worked well in the insurance industry for over 100 years. This approach made sense for those times, but much has changed since then.
The 1980s brought drastic financial changes and the insurance industry was slow to adapt. Interest rates skyrocketed. Suddenly, the traditional insurance products I was trained for were no longer appealing to people looking for financial security and healthy investments. I realized that I could not wait for the industry to catch up. Instead, I needed to adapt to the changing needs of my clients. Otherwise, I would be out of business.
Even more importantly, I refused to subject my clients to inferior financial solutions or products that had the net effect of benefiting only the few who owned or ran the insurance companies.
Using what I had learned about the real value of insurance planning, my focus became helping people to achieve what they really wanted. My agency no longer subscribed to that “one size fits all” approach. We continue to work with our clients to find the plan that best suits their goals.
Now, 50 years after I started, the gap between those who are struggling and those who are well off, and even uber wealthy, has never been more evident. Unless something changes radically, Millennials, the new Gen Alphas, and future generations have a very difficult path to save enough to buy a home, build a nest egg, or even be able to afford to have families. The baby boomers are also finding themselves in precarious financial situations, stretching retirement funds to support themselves while trying to help their children and grandchildren.
The question we continue to ask ourselves is: Can owning insurance help with these problems?
The answer is yes, with some qualification. In small steps, insurance planning with our agency will help young people achieve their dreams. My growing team, which includes my millennial children, continues to develop our agency approach. We help our clients find the insurance plans that are right for them. We recommend affordable approaches to the building blocks required to meet their goals, allowing them to live comfortably.
I started out this article with a quote attributed to various Chinese philosophers; it has several variations. For me, it means creating a partnership with our clients to achieve their security.
